  1. Q. Write a note on Critical Thinking.

    Ans: INTRODUCTION
The act of thinking is something that we all take for granted as something that we do all the time we are awake. But how many of us really do think? François-Urbain Domergue, a French grammarian and Journalist made a famous quote that “Some people study all their life and at their death they have learned everything except to THINK ”.
So, thinking is the processes of the brain involved in processing information such as when we form concepts, engage in problem solving, to reason and make decisions. As the World becomes a more connected and populated, and often at times a more polarized, it urges us to become thinkers. The ability to understand and empathize with several perspectives at once is increasingly becoming a major skill in our globalized world.
In the simplest form thinking is a purposeful, organized cognitive process that we use to make sense of our world.
HISTORY & DEFINITIONS of CRITICAL THINKING
The intellectual roots of critical thinking are as ancient as its etymology, traceable, ultimately, to the teaching practice and vision of Socrates 2,500 years ago who discovered by a method of probing questioning that people could not rationally justify their confident claims to knowledge. Confused meanings, inadequate evidence, or self-contradictory beliefs often lurked beneath smooth but largely empty rhetoric. Socrates established the fact that one cannot depend upon those in "authority" to have sound knowledge and insight. He demonstrated that persons may have power and high position and yet be deeply confused and irrational. He established the importance of asking deep questions that probe profoundly into thinking before we accept ideas as worthy of belief. He established the importance of seeking evidence, closely examining reasoning and assumptions, analysing basic concepts, and tracing out implications not only of what is said but of what is done as well.
The term "critical thinking" has its roots in the mid-late 20th century. There are overlapping definitions, together which form a substantive, transdisciplinary concept of critical thinking.
Critical Thinking as Defined by the National Council for Excellence in Critical Thinking, 1987 A statement by Michael Scriven& Richard Paul for the {presented at the 8th Annual International Conference on Critical Thinking and Education Reform, Summer 1987}.
Critical thinking is the intellectually disciplined process of actively and skilfully conceptualizing, applying, analysing, synthesizing, and/or evaluating information gathered from, or generated by, observation, experience, reflection, reasoning, or communication, as a guide to belief and action. In its exemplary form, it is based on universal intellectual values that transcend subject matter divisions: clarity, accuracy, precision, consistency, relevance, sound evidence, good reasons, depth, breadth, and fairness.
Moor and Parker define Critical thinking as – ‘Critical thinking is careful and deliberate determination of whether to accept, rejects, or suspend judgment.’
Similarly, Tittle has his own definition as- ‘Judicious reasoning about what to believe and, therefore, what to do.’

  5. Explanation of Videos
Name: Khushbu Patel, Priyanka Gavit, Nikita Patel
    Video 1 and 2
Critical thinking is about asking right question which helps to access both meaning and significance of claims and arguments. Building the skills and apply them in our life makes it easier for us to access evidence. Critical thinking means identifying the key points and analyzing the source of information. Just as the judge and jury who do according to law and putting it all together in to your own independent thought through point of view. Critical thinking isn’t about being critical and it’s about much more than just finding flaws in other people’s claims by itself that isn’t enough to give us an edge. To be a true critical thinker means being creative reflective and adaptable. Thinking critically means taking stand for our self. Critical thinking is also about the sense of discovery and excitement. Not only about learning but evaluating arguments to see how they stand up and filtering for our self what resonate is right or wrong. By using these techniques we will find our self becoming a clearer better thinker.
In the second video the definition and purpose of critical thinking are given. According to Moore and Parker “Critical thinking is the careful application of reason in the determination of whether a claim is true” Generally Critical Thinking requires some key features. They are as below.
    1) Careful and intentional thinking clarify as a judicious, which means good thinking that requires sufficient time. Thinking should be conveyed in a purposefully and deliberate manner.
    2) Use of logic or reason means that Critical thinking is an active process. A person have to understand some Factors in a critical way like Social, ethical and economical contexts.
    3) Judgment about beliefs: It has the way to articulate judgment for your decisions. After having one’s view about something if you accept it directly without any argue, it becomes inherited opinion as you recognize what someone says.
    4) Application to real world problems: Both points explain about the purpose of the Critical Thinking. A Claim or Evidence is true or false. In Real world Critical Thinking recommends reasons and actions and evaluates the reasons given by others.

  6. Write a note on Critical thinking.
Critical thinking is all about asking questions, in precise the right questions. Moore and Parker define critical thinking as “the careful application of reason in the determination of whether a claim is true”. According to Tittle critical thinking is “judicious reasoning about what to believe and therefore, what to do”. Thinking critically means taking a stand for our ideas. The critical thinkers need to evaluate both the meaning and the significance of a particular situation. The duty of a critical thinker is to find what is accurate and what is evaluative. Critical thinkers need some qualities. They need to be critical, adaptable, creative and reflective.
    Critical thinking requires;
    • Careful intentional thinking- Critical thinking allows us to determine whether we agree or disagree with a claim made by someone. Our goal is to fully evaluate all parts of a claim and accordingly we can accept or reject it. We need to be judicious and sensible in our thinking. Thus critical thinking is an exercise in problem solving.
    • Use of reason or logic- Critical thinking is an active process. Sometimes it deals with our emotions. So we need to apply reason and logic according to the situation.
    • Application to the real world problems and judgement about beliefs- We are asked to take a position regarding the truth or acceptability of something. We should find out whether the claim is true or not and how do we act based on that information. Critical thinking helps us to offer reasons, actions and evaluate reasons of others. Taking time to critically think will improve our insight and understanding.
According to Edward Glaser critical thinking involves three things:
    • An attitude of being disposed to consider in a thoughtful way the problems and subjects that come within the range of one's experiences.
    • Knowledge of the methods of logical inquiry and reasoning, and
    • Some skill in applying those methods.
Critical thinkers are able to evaluate and solve problems. People, who think critically, consistently attempt to live rationally, reasonably and consciously. They are able to see connections between topics and use knowledge from other disciplines to enhance their reading and learning experiences. In brief we need to have a reasoned judgement on what we agree or not.

When we do critical thinking at that time some important thing must be take in to account like carefulness, intentional thinking, logically thinking etc. critical thinking having mainly two components:
    1. A set of information and belief generating and processing skills.
    2. Judgment about beliefs and application to real world problems helps for the purpose of the critical thinking.

second part of the task including two articles.
    Article 1:

  13. The concept of critical thinking has been discussed the years before, it has its roots in the mid late 20th century. critical thinking is an intellectual process which includes conceptualization, application, analysis and evaluation of different information to accept it as a belief or an action.
critical thinking is self guided, self disciplined which attempts to reason at the highest level of quality in fair minded way.the people who think critically always try to improve their thinking, no matter how skillful they are. they always have the tendency to learn more. they always keen to learn from their mistakes and to contribute something helpful to the society. The question that arises of why critical thinking? all the actions we do are the results of our thinking or our beliefs. so if we think by keeping the bias or prejudice or partiality in mind, we would do our actions accordingly. but when we think critically we avoid all those bias and prejudice and we put emphasis on evidences which lead us to a true action. Edward Glaser(1941) defines critical thinking as the ability to think critically which includes three things.
1 the willingness to deal with the problems and subjects in a thoughtful way.
2 knowledge of methods of logical inquiry and reasoning
3 skills in applying those methods.
critical thinking examines any belief on the basis of the evidences that support it.

3)Judgement about beliefs and Application to real world problem :-
When we arrive at your decision, we apply it in our real problem. Then after, when we decide either is true or false our judgement, then we assess to decide what action to take in real world problem. Critical thinking helps us offer reason, actions and evaluate reasons of others.

  21. Q) Write a note on critical thinking.
    A) Thinking is a complex human process. Every person thinks but critical thinking is different from normal thinking. Critical thinking means: critical + thinking i.e. To think logically or one can say to think critically. According to Moore and Parker critical thinking is careful and deliberate determination of whether to accept, reject or suspend judgment .In simple terms it is a process of evaluating, synthesizing and analyzing information. It’s an active process. As a critical thinker one examines, evaluates and analyzes information before reaching to conclusions. People who think critically consistently attempt to live rationally, reasonably and empathically.
Critical thinking is necessary as it systemize ones thoughts and also improves quality of thinking. Thus critical thinking is a process with ancient roots which starts with Socrates questioning method. It is a process of thinking clearly and rationally and reaching at conclusions after analyzing and synthesizing information. Ans. Critical thinking is different from normal thinking. It is rather an art of thinking as through critical thinking one starts thinking in order and it can be termed as more logical thinking. More precisely if we divide critical thinking then it is critical + thinking which means thinking clearly and logically. Concept of critical thinking has its root in mid – late 20th century. As per NCTE Committee on Critical Thinking and language Arts Critical Thinking is “a process which stresses an attitude of suspended judgment, incorporates logical inquiry and problem solving and leads to an evaluative decision or actions.” In simple terms critical thinking is skillfully conceptualizing, applying and evaluating information. Before reaching to conclusions one evaluates and synthesizes the information and thinks about how much correct information is .It is based on evidence and arguments on particular information or a topic.
It is an active process where thinkers think actively and commit themselves to life – long practice towards self improvement. They embody the Socratic principle: The unexamined life is not worth living, because they realize that many unexamined lives together result in an uncritical, unjust, dangerous world . So in critical thinking thinker is more active during the thinking process.
So, in nutshell we can say that critical thinking is an active process where thinker thinks logically and evaluates and synthesize information to reach at the conclusions.

Critical thinking helps us to look upon the reasons why we agree or disagree on particular judgement or belief. Critical thinking helps us to evaluate the information and to finalize whether the claims are to be accepted or rejected. Critical thinking helps us to improve our skill of evaluating something and reach to the most appropriate conclusion.

Critical thinking means you evaluate and arguments on those question using your own higher order thinking skill. While thinking critically we just don’t look forward and think by using higher order thinking skill but we also go back or step back in situation to understand it clearly. And critical thinki9ng is just not about thinking critically or finding solutions but it’s about being creative. It means reflecting and evaluating your own decisions and evidences by yourself. Knowing or considering yourself that Is it sufficient or appropriate? Critical thinking is taking stand for oneself. We ourselves decide what is right or wrong by using higher order thinking skill.

    In the second video, the introduction of critical thinking is given. The video show that critical thinking does not mean criticizing but it means thinking with reason. It means you think with question or reason not an ordinary thinking. In the video two definitions are given. They are;

“The careful application of reason in the determination of whether a claim is true”. – Moore&Parker

“Judicious reasoning about what to believe and, therefore, what to do”. – Tittle

Both the definitions are explained very well by the presenter. He explained definitions into the pieces. Critical thinking is careful and judicious thinking. For thinking critically we need time to think. Critical thinking takes fully evaluation of particular topic on which you are thinking critically. Critical thinking is not passive but it’s an active process of once mind higher order thinking with reasons and evidence. In critical thinking claim is important. Claims make us to think critically. We can make a claim or we can defend a claim.

The presenter further says that critical thinking means to use of reason or logic. Without reason critical thinking is not possible. So there has to be a reason to prove your claim right or wrong. And whatever argument or claim we made that should be logical. It means we need to think logically. He further says that critical thinking is judgment about belief. It means there should be reasoned judgment why you agree or not.

In nut shell, I would like to say that critical thinking means to offer reasons, claims, and actions, to questions and need to evaluate, judge and make decisions on those questions.

In the first article according to Scriven and Paul, critical thinking means Intellectual activity of thinking which is well conceptualized, analyzed, and evaluated by observing, reasoning, and claiming.
Critical thinking can be done in different fields or rather we can say different modes of thinking i.e. scientific thinking, mathematical thinking, historical thinking, economical thinking, and philosophical thinking etc.

The article also talks about who is critical thinker? The critical thinker is one who raises the questions, gives arguments with evidence, assumes, claims on opinions, communicate with others to solve problems, and think logically to give well reasoned or clear solution or conclusion of the problem or question that one is true critical thinker.

It is a process of higher order thinking skills where the thinker will use their cognitive thinking skill to come out at desirable ideas. Critical thinking focuses on desirable outcomes. In short, critical thinking means to think above the level of thinking. It means not only thinking but while thinking we use our logical ideas, reasons, assumptions and claims to make our thinking clear and reasonable one from the ordinary one.
