Read the instructions carefully before you proceed.

Critical Thinking Self Assessment

Please read the article located in Critical Thinking: A Stage TheoryReferring to the information and ideas presented in that article, please respond to the following:

1.  What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills?  (for ex:  strengths and weaknesses).  Which stage best describes your thinking?  How do you move forward?

2.  Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills?  If so, what kind of tools?  If not, can you think of possible tools?

3.  How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?

The three questions above are suggested starting points for discussion; there may be other aspects you would like to discuss, but please do refer to the article to show that you have read it and thought about it carefully.

Class presentation: Your end of term presentation will be based on this task. Decide what stage of critical thinking you are at and what you could do to go to the next stage. Dates of the presentation will be declared next week.

Hence, your deadline for the following task is 26th January, 2017 Saturday.

Best wishes,

  1. 2. Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?
Ans 2: UGC NET test made me aware of the need to cultivate reasoning skills. The general paper aims at testing general and research aptitude. The paper has section of reasoning that includes logical and analytical reasoning. When I appeared for NET for first time and tried to solve the questions based on reasoning I failed to understand it. But before going for second attempt I prepared myself by taking online critical thinking and reasoning tests and also referred some books for basic concept. Solving logical puzzles is a good tool to cultivate critical thinking ability.
    3. How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?
Ans 3: Reason and Ignorance, the opposites of each other, influence the great bulk of mankind. If either of these can be rendered sufficiently extensive in a country, the machinery of Government goes easily on. Reason obeys itself; and Ignorance submits to whatever is dictated to it. – Thomas Paine
I was ignorant of the process of thinking and importance of critical thinking in our daily life. This self evaluation has set the thought process in motion on a self improvement path. It is rightly said that ‘we are best judged by ourselves’ self – evaluation directs us to prepare our next performance from the past and today’s experiences. Improvement begins with I. This self evaluation about my critical thinking process and development has given me a lot of insight. Through this kind of self evaluation I started thinking about how I think? Whether I think logically or I just follow the crowd? I became aware of my strength and weakness as a thinker. I even came to know that what and how much I have to still develop in order to become a master thinker.

  2. 1. What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills? (for ex: strengths and weaknesses). Which stage best describes your thinking? How do you move forward?
Ans1:“Respect the brain, Build the Mind”. To build the mind we need to use our mind or exercise our mental capacities in a word we need to ‘Think’. Everyone’s mind keeps on thinking round the clock, as various thoughts, ideas cloud our mind. We try to come out of the web of thoughts about a particular problem and reach to a conclusion to solve a problem. This process of reaching a solution in simple terms can be associated to Critical Thinking. We all make decisions in life every second minute.
Thinking is inevitably driven by the questions we seek to answer. As Albert Einstein rightly says "The important thing is not to stop questioning.” As we begin to question or reason or challenge a claim or argument, we try to figure out ‘why’ ‘how’, etc. we move forward to collect information to make inferences first these inferences are based on postulations, then we assemble our information, assumptions and inferences and build a concept or point of view. "No problem can be solved by the same consciousness that created it. We need to see the world anew." – Albert Einstein. So, Critical Thinking is thinking which helps you figure out whether you should believe some claim, and how strongly you should believe it. Since you should only believe what is true, critical thinking is, as I like to say, it is the art of being right.
Critical thinking is a metacognitive skill. What this means is that it is a higher-level cognitive skill that involves thinking about thinking. We have to be aware of the good principles of reasoning, and be reflective about our own reasoning. Critical thinking can help us acquire knowledge, improve our theories, and strengthen arguments. Critical thinking skill has three important components: theory, practice, and attitude.
According to Linda Elder with Richard Paul ‘Critical Thinking is the ability and disposition to improve one’s thinking by systematically subjecting it to intellectual self-assessment.’ And “Critical thinking is thinking about your thinking while you're thinking in order to make your thinking better.” - Richard W. Paul
I am at a stage where my critical thinking skills are yet to be polished. The mind is always misted up with myriad thoughts and it is difficult to focus. I need to develop the art of being systematically focussed, although sometimes through external motivation, I am able to focus and think critically. I consider myself a “Beginning Thinker”. I have limited insight and I am intermittent in monitoring my thought. Although I am a novice, I know the significance of critical thinking skills in my life as a teacher and person. This course has given me insight into the importance of thinking in a systematic manner and the process involved in it. During the thinking process I struggle to reach a solution because of my sensitive and emotional nature, which clouds my ability to think without bias. I lack in high quality reasoning, a clear solution to problems, and sometimes systematic planning to improve my thinking. I am aware of my weaknesses as a critical thinker. I will now cultivate the habits of good critical thinking and try to improve everyday, step by step to move to next stage of critical thinking development. One needs to recognize and tackle predispositions, as Henry Thoreau quotes "No way of thinking or doing, however ancient, can be trusted without proof", and now being exposed this paper is the proof that will motivate me.

Critical thinking is the ability and disposition to improve one’s thinking by systematically subjecting it to intellectual self-assessment. We recognise that person are critical thinkers in a fullest sense of the term. They display this ability and disposition of the dimensions of their lives as a parent, citizen, friend, and learner.
We find certain strength and weaknesses as regards critical thinking. A good critical thinker has certain strengths. He regularly practices thinking accurately. He assesses and actively improves thinking. He know that quality thinking requires reflective thinking. He develops understanding of the role of self-deception in thinking. Commanding a variety of skills, he practices good thinking to become a good thinker. He develops a good habit of thinking and a sound habit of thinking and a sound habit of thoughts. He actively analyses thinking in a number of domains and eliminates egocentric thinking. He always focuses on the purpose, question, information, implications and clarifies information and remains fair-minded.
We find certain weaknesses among the critical thinkers they lack in the ability to assess their thinking and short of knowledge of high quality. The fail to recognise the concept, assumption, implications, point of view. They are unaware of the standards like clarity, accuracy, relevance. They lack of systematic for monitoring and improving thinking.
We find different stages of thinker like 1) The unreflective thinker 2) The challenged thinker 3) Thebeginning thinker 4) The practicing thinker 5) The advanced thinker 6) The master thinker
As far as my present stage I am in the stage of practicing thinker. I have overcomes the weakness of the unreflective thinker, the challenged thinker and the beginning thinker. During the process of coming to the practicing thinker, I have commanded the strengths inherent in the unreflective thinker the challenged thinker and the beginning thinker. In this way I have moved from the reflective thinker to the present stage shedding weaknesses of preceding stages of thinkers and gaining strengths.

    Ans: 02: No

Ans:03: Self-evaluation is useful in many ways. The thinker rather strong and better thinker has to resort to self-evaluation in order to master critical thinking. The thinker with the help of self-evaluation is able to state and explain goals and purposes. He can learn content at a deeper permanent and higher level. He is able to clarity questions and solve problem, if any he is now able to explain and apply what he learns and what he gathers. Gathering information and data and organizing them becomes easy to him. Meaning and significance of information is explicitlyassessed by the thinker. He can understand the concepts and identity assumptions. He is able to consider implications and consequences fruitfully.
Through self-evaluation a thinker becomes a more motivated learner. He applies what he has learnt and what he has known. He can distinguish significant matter. He can express precisely, perfectly and exactly. Self-evaluation makes a learner able to follow and stick to questions and it does not let him wander in his thinking. He can make out the complexities in the questions and issues and considers the point of view easily. He can express his ideas easily and logically, coherently and smoothly.
Self-evaluation makes a learner from good to better and from better to best. He can progress from one stage of thinking to the last stage and master the thinking and become the master thinker. It is very useful thing that helps the learner progress continually.
In short, we can say conclude that self-evaluation is an elixir that makes a learner or thinker independent and autonomous. It can lead him to achieve the higher level of thinking just by being helped and evaluated by none other than himself.

Que: 1 What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills? Which stage best describes your thinking? How do you move forward?
Ans: 1 Critical thinking always plays an important role in decision making and problem solving. Critical thinking provides us a way through which we can analyze and evaluate the situation with help of appropriate evidences and can reach to a final conclusion. Critical thinking helps us to think in a fair-minded way in which we give importance to other peoples points of view no matter they are supporting or opposing.
As we discuss with each other we find that stage 3 best describes our thinking as we have understood the importance of critical thinking while making any decision. We have developed a tendency to question our own thoughts. we have limited insights into deeper level of the trouble inherent in our thinking. We know the importance of critical thinking but we are not actually aware how we can improve our thinking in a systematic way.
Lots of practice in critical thinking can be helpful to us to move forward to the next stage.

Que: 2 Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?
Ans:2 assessing the reasoning skill is very important to check our thinking level. Now a days the government introduces competitive exams and different tests such as teacher aptitude test. These exams are very useful tools to check our reasoning abilities. We all have done our B.Ed and have appeared for TET and TAT and NET exams, while preparing for these exams we came across many materials that helped us to solve the reasoning and logical questions. In the previous semester we attended a workshop on critical thinking by Milan Pandya which also we found useful to evaluate our thinking abilities.
Que:3 How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?
Ans:3 self evaluation always plays an important role in improvising our self. Self evaluation helps us to check at what level we are and at what level we want to reach. Self evaluation reveals what our limitations or weaknesses are and how can we get rid of them. So self evaluation can be helpful to lift our self from down to up.

  5. Answer 1
Critical thinking is understanding, evaluating and problem solving for me. Its also art of think, thinking more clearly, accurately. Critical thinking is improving our quality thinking by analyzing any problem. The quality of our thinking is based on our thoughts. Within the help of critical thinking a person can communicate effectively for finding solution.
First stage is the unreflective thinker: how thinker develops some reflective awareness of how thinking operates for good or bad. If we talked about knowledge thinking then these kinds of thinkers have develop various skills in thinking but they fail to recognize concept, assumption. Unreflective thinker may have developed a variety of skills in thinking without being aware of them. There are some implications for instruction: we must recognized that in the present mode of instruction for student to graduate from high school, or even in collage, and still be largely unreflective thinkers. Many of the students don’t aware of how to thinking.
I always move forward to my thoughts, which helps me for my future study. It’s great way to become critical thinker.
    Answer 2
No, I haven’t used any tools for assessing our own reasoning skills.
    Answer 3
I would like to describe hear, how self-evaluation useful. It is helpful to think critically in our daily routine with practice in the classroom.
Its also helps to challenged thinkers to develop an initial awareness of thinking as involving concept, assumptions.
Self-evaluation can also helpful in my study to recognize the basic problem and make better understanding on any topic. Its also use for evaluation or analyzing the data.
    Thanks

  6. 1. What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills? (for ex: strengths and weaknesses). Which stage best describes your thinking? How do you move forward?
Thinking is a logical process generally happens in human psyche. At the initial stage a thinker may be not aware about thinking, and he can’t control his thinking process. That’s why he may not aware about the weaknesses and strengths of their thinking process. As a learner I best describe myself at the stage of Unreflective thinker. At this stage thinkers are unaware about thinking and a role played by thinking in their life. Most of them lack the abilities to improve their thinking. I am also unaware about the role played by thinking in my life. That’s why I describe myself best as unreflective thinker. To move forward from this stage at first I should take help of teacher to know about thinking and then focused on thinking process and the role by thinking in one’s life, after knowing all this I can gradually move forward from my current stage.
Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?
Currently as per my level, I’m not more aware about my thinking that’s why I haven’t try to asses my thinking process. But if I will be well-known of thinking then I will use below mentioned tools to asses my thinking. The tools are clarity, accuracy, precision, relevance and logicalness. These are possible tools I will use for self-assessment.
How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?
Self-evaluation is always helpful for self improvement. After self-evaluation we come to know our weaknesses and strength. Based on its we can take various steps to improve our thinking skill. We can make systematic & logical plan for development of thinking. Then gradually we can improve thinking. In these ways self-evaluation is helpful to one to improve thinking skill.
Finally critical thinking is in many ways helpful in our life to take some important decision and make our life convenience for ourselves. We should have good thinking skill, it makes us to find evidence for claim and establish a good research in academia.

  7. Q: 1) What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills? Which stage best describes your thinking? How do you move forward?
Critical thinking is a evaluating the problems and problem solving skill. Critical thinking is plays important role in our life to solve any problem. Through the critical thinking skills we can analyse each and every problem. Some people are strengthening in critical thinking skills and some are weak. I also think critically but not aware of it. I am a poor thinker. There are different kinds of the thinking stages. I am an unreflective thinker or beginner thinker. I want to improve my critical thinking. I need practice to think critically and analyse the problems. I move forward first become practising thinker then move to next stage of thinking.
Q: 2) Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?
No I never used any kind of tools for assessing my own reasoning skills. Nowadays competitive exam and entrance exam have taken. In that exam we need to think critically. In 3rd semester mr.Milan Pandya taught us how we can become a critical thinker. So it helpful in future.
Q:3) How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?
Through self-evaluation I know where am I? At which level I reach? It reveals our strength and weakness. It play most important role in improving our critical thinking. We think critically, logically and systematically. This way self-evaluation is useful in improving critical thinking skills.
Finally Critical thinking is useful in many ways in our life to taking decisions and evaluate our problems. It is useful to find evidences of the problems.

  8. Critical Thinking : A Stage Theory
    Ans 1:
I generally face problems in remembering genuine things that which are extremly notable. I even somtimes run out of words and lack in recreation of matter at a certain time. I feel am a reflective thinker as am unaware of the fact of where I face problems and unable to make out on time about what my thinking is and its applicability. I regard myself on the stage of reflective thinking as I fail to recognize my thinking skills. Therefore my thinking isint fruitfull and lacks clarity, insight and accuracy in it. At such times I sit down to recollect on a few parts of my thinking which become a base to come to a conclusion. I strain often my brain and look up for references to the hints that reoccur in my mind. I'am clueless regarding my thinking that how usefull it would be and how to assess and on what basis it must be improved.

    Ans 2 :
For assessing one's own reasoning skills I increased the range of issues to ponder on for more speculation and aspire to know and get well accustomed to the matter I choose. Self-confidence and promptness towards reasoning and thinking has also been a main element in assessing my quality on thinking critically. I have sidelined and to been honest by facing own biases and certain stereotypes. I even promptly accept the views and opinions of other people and try to make alterations in my judgements.

    Ans 3:
This kind of a self-evaluation would help polish our thinking process and we could even recognize how our behaviour gets shaped and controlled. I get to integrate my thoughts and flourish in better thinking skills. The more I 'am influenced by amalgamated thoughts the more my thinking improves.

  9. 1. What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills? (For ex: strengths and weaknesses). Which stage best describes your thinking? How do you move forward?
Ans: Critical thinking is the ability to think clearly and rationally. Changing one’s habits of thought is a long-range process, happening over years, not weeks or months. The essential traits of a critical thinker require an extended period of development. Strengths and weaknesses of my critical thinking depend on the situations in which I need to take a decision. I usually get confused to decide whether it is right or wrong. Sometimes many thoughts will roam around and here I face difficulty in finding the appropriate one. As per my understanding I am going through the second stage that is the reflective thinker because I am aware of problems in my thinking. With the help of more problem solving skills and exercise, I expect myself to achieve good reasoning and thinking skills.

2.Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?

Ans: I never used any tools for assessing my own reasoning skills. But now I am planning of solving a problem a day. I will try to figure out the logic of the problem when I get free time. This practice can give answers to my questions. Also I will try to keep in touch with my emotions so that I can ask myself questions like what made me angry or sad. This habit can cultivate good critical thinking skills.

    3. How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?

Ans. This kind of self-evaluation can help us to understand our limitations in critical thinking and what we lack. This also motivates to improve the current stage of critical thinking. Now we are aware of our weaknesses and strengths. At present we should find out more tools for improving our thinking ability and try to become a master thinker

  10. Ans 1 -Thinking is a matter of intelligence. We can change our thinking ability through change the colour of the eyes. Critical means to judge. Judge to our ideas, thinking ability and improve our thinking skill through judge our experience. It is creativity to produce the better hypothesis. It helps me to evaluate myself. I firmly believe that we have to motive our self for improve critical think skill because it is active process. It plays vital role because if we know our hypothesis is going to criticized then we seek to make it stronger as well as cultivated our self. I think that stage 3 (The Beginning Thinker) is very important for me. It helps to make initial attempts to better understand how they can take charge of and improve it. I the beginning level, we are not aware of thinking of concepts, assumptions, inferences, implications, points of view. But when cultivate it better; it becomes intellectual standard of thinking. We develop good habit of thinking.

Ans- 2. No, I have never used any other tools for assessing for my reasoning skills

Ans -3 Self evaluation plays crucial role in our life for modify our thinking ability. It motives to engage evaluation process is to cultivate our self conception and enhance our thinking ability. Self evaluation helps to improve our critical thinking as well as lead to make better thinker.

  11. 1) What is your sense of your own critical thinking skills? Which stage best describes your thinking? How do you move forward?
Ans: Critical Thinking is the intellectual ability to analyze an argument or a situation. It helps a person take rational decisions based on this skill. At some level I can think clearly and rationally about what to do or what to believe. It includes the ability of independent thinking. critical thinking skill involves understand the logical connections between ideas but sometimes I am unable to make logiacal connection between ideas depend on particular topic. Many ideas come in my mind while thinking about a situation and I become little bit confused whether my thinking about particular subject is right or wrong? I think I am on the second stage which is The challenged Thinker. To enhance my critical thinking skill I will practice it regularlly.
    2) Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?
Ans: I have never used tools for assessing my own reasoning skills. I will try to check my reasoning skills through the tool of clarity and logicalness.
    3) How is this kind of self-evaluation useful?
Ans: Self evaluation is important at every stage of life. It lead us to identify strength and weakness so after knowning our strength we feel confident at some level and we come to know where we need to make extra efforts to achieve desired things.Self evaluation show our likes and dislikes so whenever we are going to take decision for higher studies it will helpful to take right decision. It always prove useful to take right decision.

Critical thinking is the process of evaluating, understanding and problem solving for me. Critical thinking evaluates the evidence and provides final solution. It is the art of thinking clearly. It improves our quality thinking. Within the help of critical thinking a person can communicate effectively for finding solution. Critical thinking helps us to think in a fair-minded way in which we give importance to other peoples points of view no matter they are supporting or opposing.
According to me, I am in the stage of practicing thinker. In my thinking there is no weakness of unimaginative thinking, the challenged thinker and the beginning thinker. I recognize the need for systematic critical thinking and implement in to habit, i regularly monitor my own thoughts so strength and weakness can be found.

2.Have you used other tools for assessing your own reasoning skills? If so, what kind of tools? If not, can you think of possible tools?
    No.

3.How is this kind of self evaluation useful?
I am unaware about the thinking that play role in my life but self assessment is the tool for determining that. First evaluate thinking and then improve it. This evaluation can give lot of insights. By self evaluation one can understand the thinking process of their own and came to know the pattern of the thinking whether I think according to normal thought that already everyone has or think different and logically. And it will help to improve myself in becoming the master thinker.

  15. Ans 1 :- Critical thinking means to evaluate and analyse the issue in order to reach at the judgement. It plays an important role in the life . After reading stage theory of critical thinking by Linda Elder and got aware of various stages of critical thinking . I felt that I am at the stage 3 i.e. Beginning stage as I can recognise what thinking is , what role it plays , and what are the problems and challenges in it . But still I can't do a systematic thinking . Thinking process is thus unplanned . So I am little confuse whether the judgement is correct or not. So through critical thinking I want to convert my weakness into strength and to move forward to the next stage i.e. practicing thinker . So that I can learn to do correct and systematic critical thinking

Ans 2:- No I have not used any tools for assessing my reasoning skills .But for doing a systematic critical thinking I would like to solve logical and problem solving questions . This will enhance my critical thinking skills and will help me to do more systematic thinking . Thus I like to do more practice for improving my critical thinking skills .

Ans 3:- Self evaluation is very important as one gets aware of own strength and weakness . Through self evaluation U get to know that I have no systematic thinking and do more practice will help me to become practicing thinker .
Thus in conclusion this theory help me to get aware of my own strength and weaknesses and thus practice will lead me to logical and systematic thinking .

  16. Ans 1 :- In simple terms critical thinking means to synthesize, analyse and evaluate information in order to reach at the judgement . Thist article explores various stages of critical thinking . Through this theory I got aware of strength and weakness of my own thinking . I am at beginning stage as I can do critical thinking but not in a planned manner . I want to do more practice in order to reach at practicing stage . An unplanned thinking will lead to no judgement and so through problem solving and reasoning I want to improve my thinking ability so that I can have planned thinking which will lead to perfect judgement in various situation .

Ans 2 :- No till now I have not used any tools for self assessing my reasoning skills. But after learning about stages of critical thinking I want to practice more for reaching to a systematic and planned thinking . For that I will try to solve logical reasoning questions so that I can move on to practicing stage . Through practice I want to have planned thinking which will lead me to perfect judgement .

Ans 3 :- Self evaluation means to self assess the strength and weakness of one's own thinking . It is very useful and important in life as it will make us aware of my own weakness of unplanned thinking . Through self evaluation I can turn my weakness into strength and will lead me to become a practicing thinker .
Thus in nutshell we can say that critical thinking will help us to have more planned and systematic thinking . It will lead us to proper judgement .

Critical thinking plays important role in our day to day life to take decision making and solving problem. Critical thinking is that mode of thinking- about any subject, content,or problem in which the thinker improves the quality of his or her thinking by skillfully analyzing, assessing and reconstructing it. Critical thinking is self-disciplined, self-directed, self-analyses thinking. Critical thinking has its own importance and significance. Every person has his own critical thinking regarding particular things. There are 6 types of different thinkers:-
    1) The unreflective thinker 2) The challenged thinker
    3) The beginning thinker 4) The practicing thinker 5) The advanced thinker 6) The master thinker
As a learner I think I am in the 3 stage of thinker it is the beginning thinker. At this stage person identify or recognize problem of his or her life and make initial attempts to solve it. So

  20. Critical thinking is process of thinking logically and systematically with the help of evidence, fact, and claim etc. Everybody is a thinker but to become a critical thinker we need to develop our thinking process in a way that we should think with reasoning and logically. As I opine that, I never be a good critical thinker because I don’t have knowledge about critical thinking that critical thinking is a process of thinking and it can be develop by being assuming, questioning, logically, etc. I would like to put my thinking abilities in the first stage – unreflective thinking. Because I’m still unaware of the role of thinking in my life that how thinking logically make you a critical thinker and different become ordinary thinker. I can also say that some time I’m at the stage of Challenged thinking because sometime I know the ways to solve problems but I never try to imply them. So I have to go so far to become at least good thinker. To do this I would need to take help of teachers and books to know more about critical thinking. And I do believe that one can be a good critic or thinker if he has habit read so much. Moreover, I need to think myself differently i.e. logically, to become a critical thinker.

As I already mention above that I never use to think much and so it’s obvious I have never tried to know about my thinking abilities. But now I have some knowledge about critical thinking so I would definitely like to evaluate my thinking abilities. I can do it by asking questions to myself and judging or noticing the things surrounded me. This is how I opine that I could evaluate my reasoning skills.

Self-evaluation is very useful because though it we can know that at what stage we are. It means where or which place we are strong and weak. Evaluating or knowing oneself weakness we can think in possible ways to solve or get away from weakness. Self-evaluation would help use to become think deeply and it make us higher order thinker. What I do believe is that evaluating oneself is a kind of process of Critical thinking. Because though knowing or evaluating oneself, we know that what we are and what we can be.

In nutshell, I would say that thinking is a process but thinking logically and systematically would make you to become a critical thinker. And to do this we need to know our reasoning skills and by knowing need to use them in thinking process. Additionally, self-evaluation cannot be underestimating. Because through it we can develop higher order thinking skills.
